Field Trip

7th Graders at Amelia County Middle School Enjoy Educational Fishing Day at VSU Randolph Farm

Amelia County, VA – On Monday, March 17, 2025, 7th graders from Amelia County Middle School took part in an exciting and educational field trip to Virginia State University’s Randolph Farm. The field trip, focused on hands-on learning about fishery sciences, aquaculture, and sustainable fishing practices, gave students an unforgettable experience filled with both fun and learning.

The day began with a warm welcome at the large pavilion on the farm, where students were introduced to the various activities they would be participating in throughout the day. After the welcome session, the students were divided into smaller groups and boarded a trolley that would take them on a tour of the farm’s many facilities.

The first stop on the adventure was a 3D printing station with Dr. Donaldson, where students had the opportunity to design and print their very own fishing lures. They learned about the design process and the importance of using technology in modern-day fishing practices. Dr. Donaldson, a specialist in fishery science, guided them through the creation process, showing how 3D printing can be used to make custom lures for different types of fish.

Next, students moved to a fun and interactive game led by Ms. Rachel Lawmaster, which focused on the concept of stocking ponds. Through the game, students learned about how fish are introduced to aquaculture systems and the environmental considerations involved. It was a hands-on way for them to understand the impact of fish population management and the role it plays in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

At another station, Mr. Josh Dusci, an expert in aquatic biology, taught students how to weigh and measure fish in the farm’s greenhouse. Students gained firsthand experience in how fish are monitored and tracked, a crucial part of maintaining fish populations in a controlled environment.

The next station featured Mr. James Hill, who guided students through the fish processing kitchen. There, the 7th graders learned the essential skills needed for processing fish, from handling to preparing fish for consumption, all while emphasizing sustainable practices.

One of the most exciting parts of the day was the visit to the aquaculture ponds. Students were given the opportunity to fish with Ms. LK Mondrey, an expert in the field of aquaculture, who taught them the techniques of fishing and how to properly handle and release fish back into the ponds. It was an unforgettable experience for the students, who got to put their new knowledge into action.

After a full day of exploration and learning, the students reconvened at the pavilion for a well-deserved lunch. The students had the chance to reflect on their experiences and discuss what they had learned throughout the day. The discussions were lively, with students sharing their favorite moments and asking questions about the various activities they had participated in.

Overall, the field trip to VSU Randolph Farm provided an enriching experience for the 7th graders of Amelia County Middle School. It not only gave them a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on learning but also helped them connect with nature and understand the importance of sustainable fishing practices in today’s world.

The field trip was a great success, and students left with a deeper appreciation for the sciences behind fishery management, aquaculture, and the natural world.
